Did
you learn to play mostly by ear, or with lessons?
I took
some lessons for about a year to begin with, and then off and on
I’d have
the occasional lesson. It was really no different than a kid with a
guitar.
You figure out some barre chords and then you take it from there and
just
experiment with it. You know how kids don’t have any reason
to be reverent
towards a guitar, ‘cause it’s a rock n’
roll instrument? Well, for whatever
reason, that’s always the way I saw the piano, probably
because Elton
John was so huge when I was a kid.

Ben
Folds, pluristrumentista, è nato il 12 settembre
del 1966
a Winston-Salem (USA) e dall'età di nove anni
inizia da
autodidatta a suonare il pianoforte, anche se la sua prima
attività come musicista è stata come bassista nei
Majosha, alla fine degli anni 80. Diventa famoso come front
man
nei Ben Folds Five (che in realta erano tre!):
Ben al piano e voce, Robert Sledge al basso e Darren Jessee alla
batteria,
una formazione che ai fans di Elton ricorda qualcosa di molto
familiare.
Il gruppo si è sciolto nell'ottobre del 2000 e da li
è partita
la carriera solistica di Ben Folds.
Anche se le sue canzoni e il suo stile pianistico rimangono molto
personali, ascoltandolo e, sopratutto vedendo le sue esibizioni live,
non si può fare a meno di pensare ad Elton come una delle
sue
fonti di ispirazione. Sicuramente è uno dei
cantanti/pianisti più interessanti emersi negli ultimi anni. Nel 2008, la canzone Hiroshima (B B B Benny Hit His Head) contenuta nell'album Way To Normal è un omaggio a Bennie And The Jets.
