Armed
with only his piano, his voice and a sparkly black and red jacket, Elton
John gave Lethbridge fans what they wanted to see last night.
"I'm
glad to be here," John told the nearly 6,300 audience members after
opening with "The One" during his "Greatest Hits Live" tour stop at the
Enmax Centre.
It was the first-ever performance in the city for one
of the world's most-enduring and legendary performers, whose career
spans five decades
"All of his songs are my favourites," said Brian Dagg, who, along with his wife, drove down from Red Deer for the show.
John, 65, has sold more than 250 million records worldwide. He came out
to a minute-long standing ovation and stopped to bow and point to the
crowd after every song.
His setlist, as of press time, included his hits "Your Song" and "Tiny Dancer."
"This is the biggest concert I've ever seen," said Gary Mitchell, who attended with his wife Laurie and their three daughters.
The five family members weren't able to sit together, however, as they
had an experience just trying to get tickets when they sold out in about
an hour on Feb. 11.
"We were on the telephone and computer and had about 20 friends all trying at once," Laurie said.
Ron Whan and his wife hadn't been to a concert in Lethbridge since The
Osmonds in the early 1970s. They were in Mexico when tickets went on
sale and had friends order for them.
"We lucked out big time," he said.
John's Lethbridge performance was one of three Western Canadian dates,
as he'll play in Red Deer tonight and Grande Prairie tomorrow.
